Registered Nurse - Flight Emergency
The ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice are exemplified within this Job Description. The Registered Nurse is responsible for utilizing the Nursing Process to provide nursing care for the patient throughout their life span. The nurse assumes responsibility for the outcome of nursing care delivered to patients in the Emergency Department and during emergency transports. This can occur in the helicopter, at scene flights or remote sites.
Non-flight time is spent in the Emergency Department and the flight nurses maintain competency in the ED RN role as well as meeting the expectations outlined in both descriptions.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of the patient/customer's status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the population served in the department.
Essential Job Functions:

Demonstrates emotional stability in stressful situations and adapts to unusual/unforeseen circumstances (ie weather conditions, pets/safety/security hazards) in an uncontrolled environment.
Maintains accurate nursing documentation.

Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement activities, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Maintains accurate nursing documentation including patient histories, condition and assessment of changes.
Must be able to prioritize well, act quickly in crises situations.
Demonstrates effective verbal communication skills and provides report to medical control flight following personnel, EMS/governmental agencies involved in helicopter transports per radio system.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Performs technical skills as listed:
Monitor cardiac rhythms and respond per ACLS guidelines, perform defibrillation/cardioversion, apply and maintain external pacemaker, insertion and maintenance of IV catheters, foley catheters, and NG tubes, blood administration, administration and control of narcotics and medications, including the use of infusion pumps, calculate medication rates, set up and maintain 02 (via nasal cannula, mask, ET/NT tubes) and monitor oximetry, insert oral and nasal airways; perform endotracheal and nasotracheal suctioning, perform endotracheal intubations (including rapid sequence intubation) set-up and maintain mechanical ventilator settings and troubleshoot, perform needle thoracostomies, maintenance of chest tubes, maintenance of central lines arterial lines, pulmonary artery lines, intracranial pressure monitors and interpretation of readings.
An ideal candidate must have:
Graduation from an approved and accredited school of nursing, baccalaureate degree preferred.
Current RN license
Certifications:
CPR
ABI (Aggressive Behavior Interventions)
TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum)
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Provider)
PHTLS (Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support)
ENPC (Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course)
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year critical care experience required
Previous critical care experience preferred.
