Operations Center/Service Engineers are part of a newly created program at Yahoo! aimed at providing the most talented new college graduates with real world experience in both the Operations Center and Service Engineering areas of the Yahoo! SE&O organization. As part of your Operations Center/Service Engineering rotation, you will spend 50% of your time in the Operations Center team and the other 50% allocated to a Service Engineering team on a special project. These projects will give you hands-on access to our complex production systems as well as the challenge that comes along with their operation. Special projects have been allocated in the Service Engineering teams supporting Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Advertising, Yahoo! Frontpage, Yahoo! Media and other areas.
Job Responsibilities:
In this unique role, you'll be responsible for the monitoring and remediation of both systems and network performance through the use of various network management tools and ticketing systems. At the same time, youll be able to utilize your combination of significant UNIX systems knowledge, network knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and coding sensibilities to design, deploy, monitor, and automate all operational aspects of Yahoo!'s revenue-critical platforms. The ideal candidate for this role is a technical generalist with skills ranging from production systems/ network management to software development and a desire to work their way up in the Yahoo! organization. Ideal candidate will fulfill duties in both the Operations Center and Service Engineering assignments, including, but not limited to: identifying and triaging outages, monitoring and remediating systems and network performance, running reports, tracking escalations and completing special projects as assigned. They will function as a technical generalist responsible for the overall health and performance of the assigned Yahoo! Property. They will also develop tools to automate the deployment, administration, and monitoring of a large-scale Linux environment, gain deep application-level knowledge of the systems, contribute to the overall design and specifications of our next generation applications, work with development teams to harden, enhance, document, and generally improve the operability of our systems and assist in the configuration/build-out of new deployments to facilitate our constant growth Minimum Job Qualifications: * BS in Computer Science, BSEE or equivalent
* Extensive system administration coursework
* Troubleshooting and problem solving skills, including application and network-level troubleshooting ability
* Knowledge of Internet fundamentals. (e.g. RFCs, DNS architecture, best practices, security, etc.)
* Programming skills in one or more of: C, Perl, Python, Ruby
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills Preferred Job Qualifications: * Experience with Unix (Linux preferred, especially RHEL)
* Certifications such as CCNA, RHCT or equivalent
* Internship or other experience administering large-scale UNIX installations (ISP background a plus)
* Experience with network designs, protocols, and troubleshooting
* Experience using scripting languages to perform complex automation in a large-scale environment
* Experience with SQL and commonly deployed database systems |
